What’s in your cupboards?

There comes a time when stooping down to lift a heavy mixer from a lower shelf up onto the kitchen counter isn’t quite as much fun as it used to be. Just ask Lucienne and Pierre. When the retired Barrhaven couple decided it was time to modernize their 20-year-old kitchen, a mechanical lift-shelf for their large KitchenAid appliance was one of the key items on their list of must-haves.

“We’re getting older, and that mixer weighs 26 lbs,” Lucienne said. “It was awkward trying to lift it out of that little corner cupboard.”

“We wanted to make the kitchen more practical,” Pierre added. “For two or three months before we started, every time we thought of something, or saw something we liked, we added it to our list.”

Since they already had a spacious, mainly workable kitchen area, the focus of the renovation would be on installing a pantry cupboard, along with other cabinets and accessories to maximize storage and improve access to the items in the cupboards. For this the experts at Westend Bath and Kitchen specified a suite of Brookfield cherry cabinets and space-saving accessories from Deslaurier Custom Cabinets.

In addition to a dedicated cabinet with a robust lift-up shelf for the mixer, the new cabinetry would include a well-crafted Magic Corner swing-out shelf system, a pullout spice rack, a lazy susan cupboard, and a roll-out pot drawer deep enough to hold a pressure cooker. No more getting down on hands and knees to dig for anything inside the cupboards in this kitchen. Soft-closing drawer and cabinet door hardware was specified to reduce wear and tear on the cabinets, and to create a quieter work space.

Westend Bath and Kitchen framed the cabinet work beautifully within an overall update plan that features stylish Cambria quartz countertops, and attractive Euro ceramic backsplash tiles and Centura porcelain floor tiles. Pierre and Lucienne said they were impressed with the meticulous work done by Westend installers Eric and Alain Lachance to make sure every detail was just right.

“Everything was well thought out,” Lucienne noted, referring to the thorough consultation process they went through with Westend. “The best part was seeing all of our choices come to life.” The Westend Bath & Kitchen showroom, located at 1660 Woodward Dr., is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also visit www.westendbk.ca, or call 613-226-7701 to schedule a free estimate.
